Pre-Group Identity

The sense of self that existed before the immersion in control or coercion. This term could also be called ‘pre-control,’ with clients who are born in having a pre-group identity prior to the heavy indoctrination which took place in childhood.

  • You recall traits or interests that were discouraged.

  • Reconnecting with early parts brings grief and relief.

  • You begin to recognize what was conditioned versus authentic.

Potential clinical implications (especially in high control settings)

  • Reconnection may bring comfort alongside grief.

  • Early traits or interests may resurface as resources rather than destinations.

  • These parts can support identity reconstruction without idealizing the past.
