Cultic Control

A pattern of high-control influence that restricts your autonomy by managing information, relationships, identity, and behavior to serve the group’s agenda.
• You’re taught to outsource major decisions to leaders, doctrine, or “discernment” authorities.
• You’re encouraged to distrust outsiders and prioritize the group above your prior commitments.
• You’re rewarded for conformity and subtly punished for independent thought or boundaries.

Potential clinical implications (especially in high control settings)

• Narrowed identity and reduced tolerance for ambiguity, with fear attached to exploring alternatives.
• Chronic guilt, anxiety, and compulsive self-monitoring to avoid social/spiritual penalties.
• Social dependency and isolation that make exit feel like losing your entire support system.
