Virtue Signaling

A social-status behavior where moral or spiritual displays function more as reputation management than authentic care, growth, or action.
• You adopt approved language or causes mainly to secure belonging and avoid criticism.
• You use public moral posture to distance yourself from “bad people” and protect identity.

Potential clinical implications (especially in high control settings)

• Increased shame and performative living—fear of being “exposed” as imperfect.
• Moral anxiety and social comparison that erodes genuine connection.
• Cynicism or distrust when people learn virtue is rewarded more than integrity.
